Last Blog Assignment

I learned a lot in this class. I learned how to make a website which could be very helpful in a classroom so that the parents can view it to see what is going on in the class. I also learned how to make a trifold brochure which could come in handy at the beginning of the year so that I could explain a little about myself and how I will run my classroom and to help me undergraduate chapter go to the next level. I would have like to learn how to make a grade book using excel. I did learn how to use the Google spreadsheets which could come in handy when I buy a new car and creating math time tables. I think that the idea of using Google for I presentation was good very inexpensive and gets the job down. I also wish we could have used something different to make our websites so that we could have gotten a little more creative. Overall, learned a lot and it was a great experience.

Wikipedia

I don't think that Wikipedia is a very source dependable of information. But on some things they are correct about because, you can look it up at other websites. On the other hand though if someone doesn't like something that is said on there that may be the truth then they can change it to something else so that they don't look bad. For example in the article it said Wal-Mart change what was said about them on Wikipedia was changed by someone at Wal-Mart just because, they didn't like what was said about them. There are some things on there that are factual and some that are not. On there it shows you how many times something has been edited so if it has been edited once or more then you should know that something was either changed to make that particular story about them look good or it could have just been wrong in the beginning by whom ever wrote the story in the first place. I use it a lot to find things out about particular things but I would never use it to write a school paper or anything like that.

Stanford university video

I think the video is helpful for us to understand the difference between the growth and fixed mind set. I think that it was very interesting to learn about the two different types of mind sets. I didn't really know about them before and this video was very informational. It as neat to see that this will stay with you even when you grow older. That if you have a growth mind set you will go far in life.

This will affect me as a teacher because, the children with the growth mind set will be easier to teach. The ones with the fixed mind set will be a little more difficult because, I will have to get them to lean how to see things a little differently than what they do. They won't be as willing to learn because, they may think that they already know what is right and they don't want to expand on the idea. Whereas the others will be willing to learn new things and it will help them to grow throughout their life.

Video from WGBH

I thought that the video was extremely helpful. I would definitely use this in my classroom. With this you can show the kids exactly what you are talking about. Instead of just explaining to them without any visual can be hard for them to absorb the information.

With these videos the children will enjoy them and while learning about the subject that you are teaching about. They are also easy to access to. You just go to itunes and then download the videos that you want. This is very helpful for you and the student. You could have them to go home and watch the video if they have access to the internet. You could also go to the computer lab at the school to do this as a class.

I will use this in my classroom if I have the equipment to do so. This is a very useful tool and so easy to use. I like how itunes is doing this because, where else would you find videos like these to show the kids. The ones that you get from the school are usually boring and the kids don't want to watch them or they fall asleep. Overall I think that this is a very useful tool.

week 9 How iTune University might be of help

According to Duke News, there were 42 courses that required an iPod in the year 2006. I am sure by now, many additional courses have been added to the Duke Digital Initiative (DDI). There is so much today that deals with technology that I agree it should be used more in our classes. Someone in America cannot go throughout one day without the use of some sort of technology. Every single job requires some knowledge dealing with technology, so everyone should definitely be more informed about it.

In doing more research on iPods being used in classes for instruction, I stumbled across a website dealing with iPod use at Edith Cowan University, Using iPods in Learning & Teaching. They listed a number of "ways for educators to use iPods in Teaching and Learning." Here are a few: Recording Economic Lectures, Reviewing with iPods, Text and audio, Storage of information, Developing new engineering software, Dictating lesson plans and research notes, and the list goes on! I like the way you incorporate it in our class even though it was just for a presentation.

Week 8 Duke Gives IPods to Freshmen

I just read an article explaining Duke University's new plan to give all of their incoming Freshmen a free iPod. However, their motives and plans to use the iPods are quite interesting. Duke plans to give all 1,650 incoming Freshmen an iPod downloaded with event calendars, orientation information and even school related music. They are doing an experiment this year to see if it is worth it to bring iPods to an academic use instead of just another thing to use for personal entertainment.

Many of the classes are going to be enhanced with things the students can download onto their iPods to help them with the class. They can record class lectures to be able to play them back for study. For foreign language classes they can access recorded versions of the novels they have to read so they can hear the novels in the proper way. The problem, of course, comes in with students who might not know how to use such technology. Below is the link to the article i found on the subject.

Week 7 The Fischbowl:Why Wireless? November

Wireless access to the Internet is a force multiplier; it allows students to leverage the knowledge of folks all over the world. Students need not only to be able to present information to their classmates, but to share their work with the much wider – and often more authentic – audience that the Internet provides. Our students must know what to do when they don’t know what to do. They will need to know how to learn how to learn. By offering wireless access, we are allowing them to practice “just in time” learning, whether they are in the classroom, the library or the cafeteria.

Week 6 Karl Fisch

I read the September 2007 Bog by Karl Fisch and was impressed that so many teachers are so technologically illiterate. I have always been told that you’re not a leader unless someone is following. How can one teach effectively and be a leader in today's technologically advanced society if they can not even operate a computer? I realize there are ways around it; however this doesn't mean that it’s what is best.

. My opinion is that if you choose to go into the teaching field it is an ever learning career. As teachers, we should want to advance in personal knowledge, not only for ourselves but for the future of the generation that is coming up. We are the leaders of tomorrow so its up to use to become efficient with technology today.

WEEK 4

George Hall Elementary is located right here in the Maysville community in downtown Mobile, Alabama. The technology group of the school started a website, in which it also offers a blog. It allows parents, teachers, students, and the community to stay connected with all the school happenings. It is dedicated to the student work on grade level field trips, but is not limited to just that. I believe that this school has a great idea, in which it had many comments from parents. It in fact keeps everyone outside of the school involved. It is broken down by grade level. Each grade level has valuable information about what that class is doing. The only thing that I believe that could improve was there was not any pictures, but this school is really “on top” of things. It is a great blog! http://georgehall.wetpaint.com/

Robert S. Hyer Elementary has a blog page designed by the principal, Greg Smith. He uses the blog to announce important information to the teachers, students, and parents. He has videos of programs they held at school, so the assembly can be viewed even if the you were not available to be there. He announces important dates, in which allows parents to say informed of what is going on. He also has links to other web pages that may offer valuable school related information. Many parents/teachers comment on the blogs, in which allows them to be apart of the happenings at the school. I believe that this is a great idea and in fact a great blog that keeps the whole school up to date with what is going on. Check it out!! http://hyerprincipal.blogspot.com/

ACCESS

The ACCESS program is a free program to all public, high school students. The vision of ACCESS is to provide equal access to high quality instructions to improve student achievement through distance learning. The mission is to provide an infrastructure that delivers quality learning opportunities for all citizens.

Being apart of this program allows the students to gain knowledge, and this will make them eager to learn. This program allows students that attends lower funding schools have a better education.I think this program opens a door for students that's not able to go to private schools.

Using ALEX in the classroom

Using ALEX in the classroom is a very helpful tool for any teacher from K to 12th grade. This is a way to be reminded of what concepts need to be taught to students.Using this website while planning lesson plans is a great to keep the necessary concepts at the forefront of the teachers' mind.
I would register to get an account so i could sign into the lesson plans and all other sections of the site to get the most use of it. It also is a great way to get ideas about personal workspace. To change up the style is always good to experiment with different ideas and to see what works best with the children. I will definitely want to make use of this website when I start teaching.

adding new picture

This is a picture of the 1968 Olympics taken during the summer games of 1968

ALEX

The Alabama learning exchange is a excellent website. I had to use this site in my classroom management class last summer. It offers resources for the needs of teachers, administrators, parents, and students. It have different links, activities, and the opinions of teachers that use it.
The website is split into eight sections. There is a section for a courses of study, web links, lesson plans, search, personal workspace, professional learning, distance learning, and help. Under each section, there are specific links that are more detailed for each person personal interest. The web links section has a teacher web link that is designed to help teachers for each course or subject of study. This ranges from lesson plans to helpful links. This is a great site to find reubric's from the different subject matter.

Did You Know

The person that came up with this presentation is a very creative individual. In the presentation it gives some interesting statistics about the change going on in the world. Change can be good but also it has created a lot of problems.
